Metro Pioneers, serving and socializing
Metro Pioneer Information
MEETINGS: The Metro Council/Life Member Club meets several times a year at business luncheon meetings held at Elsie’s restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis. Notices about the meetings are sent out via email to Pioneers who’ve participated in them before or who have asked to be placed on the distribution list and also will be posted on this web page under the Upcoming Events tab. Elsie’s provides us with a lovely meal (salad, entrée, dessert and beverage) for a very reasonable cost. Meetings begin around 10:45-11:00 for social time, business meeting around 11:30 and lunch at 12. The business portion of the meeting is very informal. We remind ourselves what Pioneer activities happened since our last gathering, news is provided about up-coming activities and members make motions for monetary donations our Council makes to area charities. Usually at the meeting we also hold a Community Collection where members generously bring in items that will be donated to area food pantries or shelters.
CASINO TRIPS: The Metro Pioneers also hosts quarterly fund-raising bus casino trips to Treasure Island Casino. Pick up/drop off is at a location in New Hope. Trips are usually scheduled the first Wednesday in March, May, August and November. Flyers about the casino trips are also sent out via email and posted under the Metro Events & Meeting Notices tab on this web page. All are welcome: Pioneers, family and friends are welcome to come on our Fun Bus. We charter one 56 passenger bus – so if you’re interested in coming, be sure and sign up early to reserve your seat. First come-first served.
HUG A BEARS: The Metro Pioneers continue a long-standing Pioneer tradition of making Hug A Bears – those sweet, soft, handmade cloth teddy bear that are given by first responders to a frightened or injured child in times of crisis. A group of about 10 ladies meet once a month from September to June at a senior care center in Crystal on the second Tuesday of the month (from 9am to about 2pm) to stuff the bears, finish them (we sew up the butts!) and top them off with a bow tie. Bears are donated to ambulance services from HCMC and North Health. Service We usually make 50-70 bears a month. We have a couple of dedicated sewers that will trace, cute and sew the bears at home and others add eyes and noses, trim and turn the bears which then are ready for the group to stuff and finish. We’re always looking for new helpers. Come and check it out – you don’t have to be a seamstress to join.
